Yusuf Pathan's phenomenal all-round act helped Rajasthan Royals win the Indian Premier League 2008 in a thrilling last-ball finish against Chennai Super Kings. In what must be one of the finest all-round performances in recent times, Pathan turned the match on its head twice --- first with the ball, then with the bat. Chennai were off to an assuring start. Parthiv Patel and S. Vidyut added 39 for the first wicket when Pathan struck. In fact, he went on to take the first three wickets, bowling his stump-to-stump spin. Then, with Rajasthan under the burner at 42-3 Pathan struck a characteristically brutal 56 (39 balls, 3 fours, 4 sixes) to bring his team at the doorsteps of a famous win. When Yusuf was run out by a blinding direct hit from point by Suresh Raina, the Royals needed 21 from 14 balls. Chennai were not spectacular with the bat, but they worked hard to get 163-5 runs on the board. The going wasn't easy --- Chennai managed just nine fours, to go with seven sixes --- and relied heavily on good running to reach their score. After an enterprising start by their openers Patel (38) and Vidyut (16), Chennai lost their way a bit against the off-spin of Yusuf Pathan who took 3-22, his best figures in the IPL. Raina provided the pulp to the innings with his 43 from 30 balls and left the stage to his skipper to provide the finishing touches. Dhoni made 29 (17 balls).Chennai must rue their finish. They made just 46 runs in the last five overs when they had six wickets in the dugout. But Shane Watson and Sohail Tanvir were not easy to get away. The two mixed their full tosses, bouncers, slow balls and yorkers to keep Chennai's batsmen guessing. Pathan walked away with the man of the match in the final game while Watson is the man of the series. Tanvir, for his 22 wickets, won the purple cap. The orange cap for the highest scorer went to Shaun Marsh of Kings XI Punjab. Warne's side received a cheque of USD 1.2 million, while the runners-up Chennai got half that amount.

Rajasthan Royals take on Delhi Daredevils in the first SF of the IPL

A high-octane contest between two well-balanced sides is on the anvil when table toppers Rajasthan Royals take on the confident Delhi Daredevils in the first semifinals of the Indian Premier League on Friday.The two teams, which finished first and fourth in the preliminary 56-game phase of the Twenty20 league, look evenly matched .The Shane Warne-led Rajasthan, impregnable at home in Jaipur, had finished with only three losses from their 14 preliminary phase ties and have a 1-1 head-to-head record against the Daredevils, led by Virender Sehwag, who got into the last four with seven wins and 15 points to their credit.Both the teams have depended on their top-order to fire well and pile up a big total, and middle orders of both the sides looked a bit under-prepared when chips were down. The battle between McGrath, with support from Sri Lankan Farveez Maharoof and V Yo Mahesh, and Rajasthan's successful innings launchers Graeme Smith (416 runs) and Swapnil Asnodkar could be crucial to the game's outcome.The same applies to the Sohail Tanvir-Shane Watson-Munaf Patel combine who will be up against the marauding Delhi opening pair of Gautam Gambhir (523) and Sehwag (403), as well as another in-form batsman at number three, Shikhar Dhawan.Tanvir, with his extra quick bowling arm action similar to another Pakistani Wasim Akram, has been a real revelation in the IPL and has hardly been collared by any rival batting line-up, indicated by his superb haul of 21 wickets at just 10 runs per victim. Winning the toss and fielding first has become the order of the day for matches which commence at 8 pm and the trend is likely to continue on Friday.It has been largely rain-free so far in Mumbai, barring light drizzles, and the IPL authorities must be hoping that the weather remains clear over the next few days.

IPL all set to roll today in a few hours

Bangalore: History will be created here as the mutli-million dollar IPL event gets under way in just a few hours. In the past, the Chinnaswamy stadium has hosted cricket matches and Miss World pageants; but for the first time, entertainment and sport — in that order — will converge in a big way. It will be interesting to see which comes out on top at the end of the night. For their part, Bangalore fans will be hoping that their team hands out a royal defeat to Team Kolkata in the inaugural match on Friday night; the visitors will be hoping to ride on some luck and pluck to start off on a victorious note too. The organisers — thanks to the local association — have remembered to lay out a lush green outfield and a cricket pitch too; this despite the primary task of putting up a stage for the artists, along with power lasers from the rooftop and massive speakers all along the ground. People in charge have no doubts that the pitch will remain true for the entire 40 overs. But will the highly paid cricketers live up to expectations and deliver a cracker of an opener? We will have to wait and see. There is no dearth of stars in either side. Both are led by former Indian captains and contain a host of international stars, with four from each side allowed to take the field as per the rules of the tournament. The total prize money of Rs 12 crore (the winner gets Rs 4.8 crore), ensures that the players will be interested till the very end. Big money has attracted the biggest of stars and led to an international integration that will see Australians team up with New Zealanders, South Africans with Sri Lankans along with the mother of all combinations, Indians with Pakistanis. If Dravid, the Bangalore skipper, has players such as Jaques Kallis and Mark Boucher with the experience to help him out on the field, Kolkata’s Ganguly will look to Ricky Ponting for support.

PCB imposed ban on Shoaib for five years

Maverick fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was on T u e s d ay banned for five years by the Pakistan C r i cke t Board (PCB) for gross misconduct and repeated violations of the players code of conduct, virtually ending his international career which has been plagued by injuries and controversies. The 32-year-old Akhtar, who appeared before a disciplinary committee earlier in the day on charges of publicly criticising the board, has been banned from all forms of cricket but would continue to be a part of the IPL. PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf told a press conference that the board had “lost confidence on Shoaib,’’ who was already on probation for two years for hitting fellow pacer Mohammad Asif with the bat before the World Twenty20 championships in South Africa last year. “Shoaib can’t play for Pakistan or anywhere in Pakistan. But he is free to play in the Indian Premier League which is not in our jurisdiction,’’ Ashraf said. “Shoaib’s presence damaged Pakistan cricket at every level and he has been banned from playing in any form of cricket. PCB has lost confidence on shoaib,’’ Ashraf said in a strongly worded decision by the board. The ban effectively ends the controversial 11-year career of the world’s fastest bowler, which has been rocked by injuries, disciplinary problems and a doping scandal in 2007.

More cricket awaits Team India

India will have a hectic playing schedule over the next one year, which features as many as 15 Tests apart from several ODIs beginning with the triseries against Bangladesh in the first week of June. The Bangladesh tournament also features Pakistan and will be held after the conclusion of the inaugural IPL on May 31. India would also take part in the Asia Cup in Pakistan from June 24, follow which they undertake a tour of Sri Lanka to play three Tests and five ODIs till Aug 30. Then the team goes to Pakistan again for the ICC Champions Trophy, from September 8 to 28. Next, India will host Australia for a four-Test series, to be played at Bangalore, Mohali, New Delhi and Nagpur, from Oct 9 to Nov 10. England will play seven ODIs and two Tests against India, which will end on December 23. From Jan 4 to Feb 20 next year, India will visit Pakistan for three Tests and five ODIs, before touring New Zealand from February 26 to April 15 to play three Tests and five ODIs.

How IPL Teams Shape Up

The second round of IPL auctions are done with and it's time once again to look at how the franchises have built their teams for the 44-day tournament.

Bangalore

Bangalore have a far more balanced look after the second auction. Just when the batting order appeared too conventional for Twenty20, they poached Misbah-ul-Haq, someone who will add the X-factor. Shreevats Goswami, the Under-19 player acquired on Tuesday, will be the second-choice wicketkeeper. With a bowling attack that's one of the best in the tournament, Bangalore look a far more flexible unit.

Chennai

It was a quiet day for Chennai, having bought most of their players in the first auction. It's a squad with a fine balance of local and foreign talent and plenty of options in both batting and bowling. It's a side with quality fast bowlers, handy medium-pacers, fine spinners, big hitters, and accumulators. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain, couldn't have asked for more.

A balanced side with an outstanding fielding unit, it also has enough local talent to give it good shape. The pace department is impressive but Delhi may still be pondering about spin. Daniel Vettori continues to be the lone specialist spin option, with Virender Sehwag backing up. Overall a side that looks like serious contenders.

No need for the second auction here. The franchise spent most of their money the first time and quickly went about signing others from the catchment areas. It's a power-packed side with a fine mix of local and foreign players. Hyderabad are making the least noise among all the franchises but don't be surprised if you see them on top of the podium.

Jaipur

They've no doubt gained the most from the second auction but are still too reliant on foreign talent. Shane Warne has plenty of options in the squad but he's allowed only four foreign players - a fact which will restrict the selection of the side. DImitri Mascarenhas, Morne Morkel and Sohail Tanvir are wonderful additions but all might struggle to get picked regularly.

Kolkata

Sourav Ganguly is the only high-profile Indian in the batting line-up. With only four foreign players allowed in the playing XI, it leaves them with a brittle middle order. Their only purchases on Tuesday were Iqbal Abdulla and Siddharth Kaul, both bowlers. It means the likes of Laxmi Ratan Shukla and other local players would need to fill the void in the middle.

Mohali

A good second auction but the batting still looks thin on paper. Most of the options are foreign recruits and Yuvraj Singh might struggle to put a balanced XI in place. Ajitesh Argal and Tanmay Srivatsava, though, could be fine picks in the long run, with both players touted as future international stars. The bowling line-up has a fine mix - well represented in both pace and spin.

Mumbai

Mumbai have a more settled unit now with Manish Pandey and Saurabh Tiwary beefing up the batting order. The only team without a foreign wicketkeeper [Delhi have AB de Villiers as a back-up option to Dinesh Karthik], Mumbai will rely on Pinal Shah from Baroda and Maharashtra's Yogesh Takawale. Expect fireworks from the top order: Ajinkya Rahane and Robin Uthappa following the two masters, Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya.
